You can increase your abiltiy to multitask after reading this, can students multitask and why some people can’t multitask. When you finish reading this article I don’t think you’ll believe in the power of multitasking as much as you did before.
Jobs that make you multitask are few and far between. Even funnier is that people with ADD or ADHD are probably better at multitasking than you are. For them, multitasking is the norm, for you, it’s probably not.
The fact that most of just aren’t good at multitasking is why there are now laws making it illegal to drive and talk on a handheld cellphone, in some areas. Texting and driving is illegal in a lot of places as well. So is driving and reading, looking at a map or putting on makeup.
Multitasking studies show that multi tasking lowers your ability to accomplish anything, even more than smoking marijuana. Tim Ferris, the guy that wrote the book, “the 4 hour work week” wrote a blog post about a scientific study that showed that multitasking lowered your IQ more than smoking weed.
Sheesh, if you smoke weed and multitask you’re pretty much screwed. Funny that multitasking actually lowers your ability to process things even more than smoking marijuana. These multi taskers just love to lord it over everyone about how much they get done because they can multi task. Not anymore.
The best way to get more done is to focus on one thing at a time and not have all of the distractions and interruptions. Yes, you’ll live if you don’t check your blackberry every 5 minutes, you’ll live if you don’t answer every ring of your cell phone, you’ll live if you only check email twice a day.
To get more done, completely focus on one thing for at least 2 hours. No checking email, no answering your cell phone or checking txt messages. Nothing but focusing on what you are doing for two whole and complete hours.
You may think you go right back to it and take off again but not really. You lost your whole train of thought and all of your focus and no matter what you think, a two minute interruption actually costs you 20 minutes of productive tim,e. Now you know why you don’t get anything done when you’re multitasking.
You also need to work with your body rhythm. About every 2 hours we have a loss of energy and focus so that’s why the two hours of focus. Then take a 1 hour break amd dp something else. Take your breaks so you can have time to relax and forget what you were working on. When you feel refreshed focus on the next thing for another two hours.
If you can develop this routine you’ll work 6 hours per day but get as much done as if you had worked 12 hours. You’ll accomplish more and feel better about it so try to make the, work two, off one, a daily routine.
Just because you can multitask doesn’t mean you get more done than those who learn to focus and then relax and then focus again. Multitasking isn’t for everyone and it’s probably not for you either.
